Coraline book redesign

Here is my design project based on the book Coraline by Neil Gaiman. Essentially, Coraline found her way into a parallel world, where her parents became dolls, they try to convince her to live in that world with them and ultimately turn herself into a doll. Upon coming back to the real world she finds out that her parents was kidnapped by the doll parents, so she has to go back and rescue them.

The story reminded me of Spirited away, a film I dearly love. Since it is based on a strong female character, rescuing her parents from a magical world with some elements of surrealism. So I try to design it towards more of a Ghibli-esque direction. I also took the liberty of changing some parts of the story, a word of warning to the fans(hopefully you don't mind too much), to add more flare to the story.

Although I didn't get much chance of expressing it; I pictured the reality to be very dull, boring, sometimes even spooky for Coraline, and on the contrary, the parallel world seems very lively and colorful. So that when she was offered to be turned into a doll in order to stay in that perfect world rather than the dull reality, maybe turing into a doll might not be such a bad idea. Hope you enjoy :)

Coraline Design Works

Here are the 'Behind the scenes' of the renderings. First two are the very broad color script of the whole story, the rest are the design works done for the different parts of the book. Too bad I didn't get to illustrate everything in the forms of painting, but hopefully these will give you better idea of how the entire project might look.
